Things to do in first year of Engineering College:

Hello flocks, I am Shreyas. I am second year student of National Institute of Technology Surathkal.

I am pursuing B. Tech. in Information Technology as major.

I am glad that you made through this journey of JEE/ MHT-CET and getting admission in Engineering College. You will start a new journey as Engineering student in a few months.

So I will be glad to have opportunity to guide you to make your first year of College smoother.

So you will have to semesters in each year, so in first semester try to enjoy and relax for some months. 

After relaxing, try to figure out what you wanna do. If you are willing to pursue your career in Tech Field, start with basics of a programming language first. You have a lot of choices. But as you can have three options: C++, Java , Python. I would suggest to go for C++ or Java as many solutions of Coding Problems will be easily available in these languages. I would suggest to buy courses online as content there is well structured. On the other side, YouTube is also there but content our there is not structured.(I would recommend to go for  CodingBlocks or Coding Ninja. They also have live classes if you prefer live classes. After completing basics of start doing Data Structures and Algorithms(DSA) in same languages. I will emphasis on this: DO THIS IN CHILL MODE. (You will get courses on this topics on same websites, also you can get package of both basics and DSA of C++ and Java.) Also after completing every topic, try questions on that on GeeksForGeeks or LeetCode. You can do questions of Easy, Medium and Hard. 

After the completion of DSA, you can go for development. For development there are fields like Web Development, Android Development, Data Science, Machine Learning, Web3, Blockchain Technologies. I will suggest to go for Web Development first if you are confused, but do not choose Machine Learning. You can do Machine Learning or Data science after other any technologies.(You will get courses for same on same websites.)

I think you wont be able to complete development in first year, so its fine if you skipped it.

Next part is academics. If you wanna opt for Job in Tech Field, maintain 8.5 CGPA. For that I would recommend, do assignments regularly and give tests and quiz seriously as it is online. Also you can join clubs and participate in various competitions. Also make more and more friends. You should have strong peer connections to have groups in projects and other stuff. Also create a LinkedIn profile and connect to people who are active in Tech community.
